Hey hey! We’re Ash + Bill – a husband and wife photography team specializing in weddings, elopements and portraits here in CNY. Our goal is to capture the brightest, most important moments of your lives so you can look back and relive them for years to come.
What brings you to Upstate New York?
We’ve lived around here our whole lives – Ash is from the Rochester area and Bill grew up in Syracuse. After meeting in Roc, we moved back here together and have been living our best life ever since.
What is your favorite place to visit in Upstate?
We love traveling so we’re going to cheat and give two answers because this is our spotlight and we can (shrug).
For a quick day trip, Ithaca is by far our favorite. We love the hiking, food and culture (hippies at heart) and would move there in a heartbeat if we could.
We also visit the Adirondacks every year, as Bill is an aspiring 46er (42/46) and has been going since he was a little babe. We took our engagement photos on top of Whiteface (Ash took the elevator #asthma), so it’ll always be a special place to us.
What is your absolute favorite food / bar / coffee spot in Upstate NY?
Also a tough one so we’ll give you multiple. #yolo
Food – Azteca, Toss n Fire, Pastabilities, Ere’s (Lake Placid)
Bar – Ash: whichever one has liquor, Bill: Now+Later (which doesn’t have liquor, lame)
Coffee – Recess, Starbucks (sorry not sorry)
What inspired your interest in photography?
Ash took a 35mm film photo class in college and fell in love, and Bill used to have a wedding videography business. Once our worlds collided, we decided to start our own side biz as an outlet to our corporate 9-5 jobs, and love that we are able to work together.
What are your favorite elements of life to shoot?
Couples are definitely our fave – we’re obsessed with the rare bond between soulmates and love getting to capture that shit on camera forever. SO. GOOD.
What’s your favorite part of your job/hobby?
Exploring new places and being creative together
Do you draw any inspiration from pop culture that helps with creativity like a favorite book or movie?
Welp we’re definitely not big readers over here. Our inspiration really comes from our love of music – there isn’t a minute of the day that we’re not listening to something. If we’re in a real creative slump though, we’ll watch some Wes Anderson to really shock the system.
What’s your favorite type of environment to shoot in?
An elopement – in the mountains – at golden hour. Goosebumps.
If you could think of one song that encapsulates your style of photography what would it be?
Wildflowers by Tom Petty – classic, pretty, natural.
What advice would you give anyone who is interested in getting into photography?
You have to naturally be a people person – no one loves getting their photo taken so it’s up to you to make them feel comfortable and have fun. If you have that skill already, then pick up a camera and just go for it. Explore new editing styles and don’t be afraid to adapt and change, it’s all part of it.
